Rings and chains: No, but you can wash hands carefully. Please note that the damage is mostly caused by scratching when your rings come in contact with abrasive surfaces. With rings and chains having the most contact and in addition to variables such as loofahs and abrasive shower gels or shampoos, we don’t recommend wearing our gold and rose gold rings or chains in the shower. However, unlike traditionally plated jewelry, our gold and rose gold rings and chains will survive the occasional shower or dip in the pool.

Yes, yes, yes. Ready-Made was created with the sensitive wearer in mind. We only use biocompatible materials that don’t harm living tissue. In fact, the materials we use are relied on extensively in the medical field as surgical tools and implants. We need to note that all stainless steel including our 316L stainless steel is composed of 5% nickel, but 316L is still certified as medical grade and biocompatible as the nickel is incorporated into the metal in a way that causes no skin reactions or harm. Less than 0.1% of the population can still have reactions to stainless steel, but you would know if this is true for you as something as ordinary as buttons on jeans would have caused an allergic reaction.
Ready-Made has the health of the planet as a priority. Our core metal, stainless steel, is one of the most reused and recyclable metals on the planet, with more than an 85% strength retention rate. Our high-tech color plating processes release no fumes into the environment and leave no residue or liquids behind. We also don’t rely on any chemicals to change the coating color of our pieces, relying instead on wavelengths. We use 100% recyclable cellulose envelopes and mailers, 100% recycled paper for our cards and boxes, and have moved away from relying on plastic packaging to transport and store our inventory.
Every manufacturer that we collaborate with is ISO certified, meaning that they meet certain standards in occupational health and safety, environmental friendliness and compliance, and quality assurance and efficiency. Our founding team also periodically visits each factory for internal audits. They are also in direct communication with all factory managers. Our hazard-free manufacturing processes neither release fumes nor leave behind residues.
We don’t use traditional metals for three main reasons:
1. Transparency. There’s a lot of talk about fair mined metals, but not a lot being done to prove this transparency. Getting to the source of gold and gemstones including recycled and reclaimed gold was a hurdle we weren’t able to overcome with certainty when we were starting Ready-Made and thinking about how to offer quality jewelry made with integrity. Vendors giving us their word didn’t feel enough.
2. The traditional manufacturing process for gold plating isn’t eco-friendly. Due to the nature of soft metals, traditional processes like wet plating and heat are utilized, and that can not only cause damage to the environment, but can also be harmful to factory workers.
3. We want to take the guesswork out of alloys (mixed metals). The materials we use - surgical stainless steel and titanium nitrite - are used in the medical field as surgical tools and implants. For the most part, our tissues don’t reject these two materials. With gold, silver, and brass, there’s always that risk of these alloys being mixed with metals that your body isn’t compatible with, leading to irritation.
We want to offer something that is timeless, looks like fine jewelry (thanks to our smooth-as-butter plating and detailed metalwork), skin-safe, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and transparent — all at a more universal price point that is comparable in price to mass manufactured, gold plated and costume jewelry.
